Rooftop Neighborhood
With population growth over the years, urban developments, mainly composed of “architecture” as a matter of human subsistence, continue to rise simultaneously, replacing vulnerable natural habitats. Apart from the green preservation areas in an urban context, moving forward to a more sustainable future, the city needs a new development model to alter changes from this current norm. The design proposal aims to redefine new inclusive relationships where nature and other lives can coexist with humanity through architectural mechanisms.
Taking the relationship between humans and other lives into consideration, the acceptance of living together under the same roof (24/7) might not be an option. Since both lifestyles are incompatible, and thus interfere with each other. For example, we often witness people get annoyed by bugs while animals get disturbed by lights at night. Therefore, a compatible relationship should allow both to have their own individual living areas and occasionally be convenient for friendly encounters, like a relationship with the neighbor.

The rooftop is a qualified architectural component for the new reformed habitat since the area has potential in terms of spaces which is considered unused by humans in most buildings and exposed to the surrounding natural contexts, including sunlight, rain, wind, etc. The application of the rooftop neighborhood model would allow the ecosystem to form and grow as the secondary layer green network apart from the existing ground level, reclaiming natural habitats with eco-services for the city.

To reach the full potential of a proposal, the current city development norm must be replaced with a large number of rooftop habitat investments. For this reason, incentive policies are very much needed to set up a mechanism persuading the investors to “CREATE” and “EXPAND” with mutually beneficial regulations, rewarded with sensible bonuses. The movement extends new design possibilities of architecture encountering nature on the upper layer.
